Chassis repair bobbins

The problem of galvanic corrosion often seen around the front wishbone bobbins is caused by dissimilar metals mounted in an area which receives spray or soaking with a conductive fluid, usually salt water but other contaminates may also be responsible.

Light damage can be cleaned up but the potential problem will still exist.

Heavy corrisive damage.

Close up of heavy damage.

In some cases the entire aluminium section around the bobbin has been corroded away. The solution is to replace the steel bobbins with a larger, hard anodised 7075 version. As well as covering the damaged area with a larger surface area bobbin,  the potential of further galvanic is virtually eliminated.

We have three variations of bobbin replacements depending upon the damage and corrosion on the aluminium sections.

Light corrosion

Usually seen around the edges of the steel bobbin, this can range from pits to small holes. The actual damage can only be seen once the OE bobbins are removed.

If the aluminium around the bolt hole is mostly intact then this bobbins pair should be used, they do not need to be centred and are an easy fit. They are much larger than the OE bobbins and will encapsulate the damaged area.

 Medium corrosion

This is when the bobbin locating hole is sufficiently corroded so that it must be replaced. This is done with a bobbin pair with a larger locating centre.

This may require fettling the hole to accept the bobbins.

Heavy corrosion

In this case the entire section around the OE bobbin is missing.

In order to restore the strength required for the wishbone support, replacement inner and outer panels are used.

The inner panel extends past where the OE beam joins with the chassis and is actually stronger than OE.

These panels are specifically shaped to fit the left or right side of the wishbone beam, and both versions are available.
