Elise S1 Aluminium Uprights

GENERAL

Strength for strength the lightest, stiffest, and easily the most durable kit available with unsurpassed bearing reliability. The rest of the kit is designed to last the life of the car.

All kits come fully assembled and pre set with the correct bump steer shims where this information has been supplied by the customer, otherwise we use the Lotus recommended initial bump steer setting for the kit type. The kits are also correctly orientated and soft locked to help reduce both fitting errors and the fitting time as much as possible.

Detailed, comprehensive and clear fitting instructions are supplied, this includes a tool list and general advice regarding the safety issues.

 

INNER FITTING

The toe link bearing is secured to the sub frame at the inner end with a double shear bracket for extra strength. The brackets are convoluted to increase the overall deformation resistance by both form and work hardening, the design also increase the clearance behind the subframe from the exhaust. 

Brackets are electropolished to reduce salt adhesion and all the required fasteners are supplied in the kit.

OUTER FIXING

The philosophy for the S1 aluminium uprights was to create a design which would not only place the the toe links in a double sheet setup but also strengthen the entire lower section of the upright.

Although the aluminium uprights are much lighter and stiffer than the later S1 steel versions they are also ultimately much weaker. The toe link section of the upright is particularly weak due to the shallow angle of the two supporting sections and it is quite common for this section to be deformed purely from high cornering loads. The original double shear bracket was developed for the Lotus Motorsport Kit and this design was copied by most aftermarket kits, the double shear bracket is located under the existing steel ball joint plinth and although it supports the toe link arm it does little to protect the upright itself from lateral forces.

The Spitfire design consists of an interlocking bracket/plinth setup which geometrically locks the two components in the lateral plane before they are compression bolted; any lateral forces applied through the toe link arm are transferred across the bottom of the upright and shared with the plinth mounting section. Apart from creating a rigid base for toe link this advanced design also helps to protect the upright itself, now no longer available new and expensive second hand.

The design also facilitates a greater range of bump steer correction than any other kit and are also very easy and simple to adjust.
